Healing Clay Skin Mask & Detox Drink

reading time: 3 min

I have been using medicinal clay for many years now, and I love it for its detoxifying and re-mineralizing properties. In this blog post I want to show you how to use healing clay for a cleansing face mask as well as for a detoxifying and re-mineralizing drink.

What is healing clay?

Medicinal or healing clay is an edible, natural, mineral powder obtained from loess (a type of clay), and therefore has a slightly earthy taste. Depending on its origin, healing clay contains different proportions of minerals such as silica, calcium, aluminium, magnesium and sodium salts, silicon, iron oxide, manganese compounds and phosphates. Basically, it's dirt!

Externally, healing clay is used for skin problems such as impurities, oily skin, acne, eczema, and skin wounds in general. Used internally, healing clay can relieve heartburn, digestive problems and diarrhea, among other things.

The way medicinal clay works is it pulls toxins (heavy metals, free radicals, pesticides) out of your body. What this means is it adsorbs the toxins by producing a negative electric charge once it's hydrated and attracting the toxins to its extensive surface area where they adhere like flies to sticky paper; then it absorbs the toxins, taking them like a sponge. Yay for dirt!

RE-MINERALIZING DETOX DRINK

2 scoops of organic medicinal clay (do not use a metal spoon!)
1 cup natural spring water

Mix two scoops of healing clay with one cup of water (using a plastic spoon!). Stir well. Allow the drink to sit for at least 2 hours or overnight to let the clay settle on the bottom of the glass. Once the clay has settled, you will notice that the water will be interspersed with particles of the healing clay; this dispersed substance is called colloid.

Now drink the colloidal water without stirring or drinking the settled clay at the bottom of the glass. NOTE: The colloidal clay water should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning and/or at night.

After drinking the mineralized water, do not discard the settled clay at the bottom! We are going to use that for our clay mask now.

CLARIFYING CLAY MASK

leftover clay from colloidal clay water

or

2 tbsp of medicinal clay
2 tbsp water

Either use the leftover clay from your detox drink, or mix healing clay with water to form a thick paste. Apply the clay paste to your face, your armpits, your back, or which ever area of your body you want to cleanse. Make sure to avoid the delicate skin around your eyes and lips.

Leave the mask on your skin until the clay is completely dry and starts to crumble, about 20 minutes. Once it starts to harden, you will see the clay change in colour and you will also feel a "pulling" sensation, it can sometimes even feel a little itchy – this is the clay pulling the toxins right out of your pores :)

Using a wash cloth and warm water, take off the mask. Apply your favourite natural moisturizer, such as shea butter or aloe vera gel.
