Being such a big fan of golden turmeric milk, it was just a matter of time before I made golden turmeric oatmeal. It's basically oats cooked in golden milk with a few twists to make a glowing breakfast bowl.

It's
Creamy
Not too sweet
Anti-inflammatory
Warm
Filling
Comforting
Delicious
& nutritious

>> Turmeric has been long known as a detoxifying medicine. It contains curcumin which exhibits 600 potential health benefits including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-septic and anti-cancer properties. Additionally, it boosts immunity, helps maintain cholesterol levels, promotes digestive health, detoxifies the liver, regulates metabolism and weight management, as well as high blood pressure, memory and brain function. A true superfood, right?

GOLDEN TURMERIC OATMEAL

Preparation time: 15 mins
Main ingredients: oats, turmeric
difficulty level: easy
serves: 2
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, soy-free, low-fat

Ingredients

2 ripe bananas
1 cup oats (gluten-free if that is a concern)
1/4 cup shredded coconut
2 cups milk (we used 1 cup soy milk and 1 cup oat milk, but my favourite for this is just oat milk)
2 tsp turmeric powder
a dash of cinnamon
a pinch of salt
a bit of cracked black pepper *

toppings of your choice

Instructions

Bring milk to a boil. In a bowl, mash your banana and add to a small saucepan along with your milk. As soon as it starts to boil, toss in the oats, stir well, switch off the heat and let it simmer on its own. Add in the turmeric powder, shredded coconuts, cinnamon, salt and pepper, stir, and keep the lid closed as it simmers. Stir every now and again.

After about 10 minutes your oatmeal should be ready, the consistency creamy and thick.

Sweeten and garnish to your liking - I used frozen raspberries, shredded coconut, and fresh mint and basil leaves for this (I don't know why, but berries and herbs go very well together). Though I would say that the oatmeal tastes best without anything sour like berries - this was mainly for decoration.

Perhaps baked apples or caramelized ginger would go great with this instead. If you like, also throw in a handful of crushed almonds or walnuts or a spoonful of nut butter for some more protein and flavour.

Enjoy :)

* Adding black pepper to turmeric enhances curcumin's bioavailability by 1,000 times, due to black pepper's hot property called piperine.
