No Bake Chili Chocolate Brownies

reading time: ca. 1 min

Oh yeah, another brownie recipe! Vegan, gluten-free and no baking!

After making my Walnut Brownies for Mother's Day, I decided to try something more spicy. This recipe contains black beans and chili - but don't worry, (a) black beans are super delicious and you won't taste them in the brownies, and (b) I am very sensitive to chili and any hot spices, and it was absolutely fine for me! Also, chili and chocolate go together very well. Especially to get your inner fire going ;) You won't be surprised to hear that I made these for my boyfriend and I's anniversary (which is today by the way, always the 8th).

Until a few days ago, my boyfriend spent three weeks in Tanzania and Zanzibar with his best friend, while I went to uni and was a good girl (sigh). Luckily he returned safely, and once he has tasted these brownies (tonight), I will let you know how he liked them :) EDIT: He loved them!

Now, these brownies. The best part (aside from eating them) is telling people they're healthy and made from whole foods! To say it in Emily's wise words: It's a magical world, my friends.

You can make these in less than 30 minutes, and they'll be gone even faster.

RAW CHILI CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

adapted from Miryam @eatgood4life

Preparation time: 30 mins
Main ingredients: dates, black beans, walnuts, cacao, chili
difficulty level: easy
makes: 12 brownie squares
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, soy-free, raw food

Ingredients

Brownies
1 1/2 cups soft dates (if not soft, soak in hot water for 15 mins)
1 can (265g drained) black beans
1 cup walnuts
1 cup ground almonds
3/4 cup cacao powder
1 tsp chili powder, or to taste
1 tsp Maca powder (optional)
a pinch of sea salt

Glazing
approx. 4 tbsp raw cacao powder
approx. 4 tbsp agave syrup or maple syrup
1 tsp coconut oil (optional)
soy milk or nut milk or sweet water from soaking the dates in, as needed

1 tsp red pepper flakes to garnish (optional)
coarse sea salt to garnish (optional)

*Why do i add Maca powder to so many of my dessert recipes? Well - without wanting to make anyone feel uncomfortable ;) - Maca is said to promote sexual function of both men and women because it serves as a boost to your libido and increases endurance. And since desserts can be quite sexy, especially raw and vegan desserts, i love to add this extra spark.

Instructions

First, soak your dates (if they aren't juicy, gooey medjool dates).

For the dough: In a food processor, combine the walnuts and almonds until they are very finely chopped. Add the thoroughly rinsed black beans, cacao powder, chili, maca powder and salt. Pulse to combine. Add the soaked and drained dates, and process until it is all well combined. Add fluid if needed (i used a splash of the sweet water from soaking the dates in - my brownies turned out pretty moist though).

The food processor may get a bit warm, so take a break every now and then, until a nice brownie dough consistency is achieved.

Press the dough into a brownie baking dish or on a baking sheet lined baking tray until it is flat and firm. You could also add a handful of cacao nibs to the dough at this point! (I didn't though.) Set aside in the fridge or freezer while preparing the chocolate glazing.

For the glazing: Stir equal parts of cacao powder and agave syrup (or maple syrup) in a bowl, forming a smooth, creamy paste. If not fluid enough, add a splash of soy (or nut) milk. That's it. Way better than store-bought chocolate!!

Take out the brownie dish, and evenly spread the glazing onto the dough. You may sprinkle the entire brownie tray with some coarse sea salt and red pepper flakes or a bit of cayenne pepper for some more spiciness. Cut into squares, and enjoy.

Store brownies in the refrigerator.
