Best Books of 2014 I End of Year Book Survey

reading time: ca. 6 min

http://be-alice.blogspot.com/2014/12/best-books-of-2014-i-end-of-year-book.html

Having read a crazy amount of books over the last months, i've decided to join Jamie from The Perpetual Pageturner in her End of Year Book survey from last year. I thought this was a wonderful year to document and review what i have read over the past 12 months. This year i have read a total of 47 books. Not bad, eh? So let's get this party started!

Note: The survey is for books you read throughout the year, no matter when they were published, and is not limited to just books that came out in 2014!

Banana Oatmeal Cookies (chocolate chip)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Preparation time: 20 mins
Main ingredients: banana, oats
difficulty level: easy peasy
makes: 15-20 cookies
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, low-sodium, and delicious "even so"

In the spirit of (lazy) Christmas i also made a quick batch of Banana Oatmeal Cookies which are made of - guess what - banana and oatmeal. THAT'S IT! (well, and a little bit of chocolate because let's face it, chocolate is a must around Christmas time!)

Fudgy Chocolate Brownies (vegan & gluten-free)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Brownies made with KIDNEY BEANS? It's a Christmas miracle!

Now, all jokes aside. I am not kidding when I tell you that it is not only possible, but also quite delicious

They are fudgy, chocolaty, healthy and quite filling. See for yourselves!

Christmas Craziness + Resolutions

reading time: ca. 1 min

Hey, it's me. With reindeer glasses. And antlers. And a little reindeer buddy.

I don't believe in New Years resolutions that barely last till the end of January, so i'll do my some of my resolutions right now, right here.

Carrot Cake Rice Pudding with Caramelized Pear (vegan)

reading time: ca. 2 min

Preparation time: 60 mins
Main ingredients: rice, non-dairy milk, carrots
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1-2
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, and delicious "even so"

Another rice recipe... are you surprised?

Probably not.

While the weather outside is cold and grey and inhospitable, my breakfast needs to be warm and comforting today! Which is why i had a super satisfying bowl (or rather: baking dish) of baked Carrot Cake rice pudding topped with a caramelized pear, raisins, cinnamon, shredded coconut, honey and a handful of crushed walnuts for breakfast.

It takes a bit longer than my usual breakfast, but it's definitely worth the effort!

Vegan Baked Apples

reading time: ca. 1 min

Preparation time: 30 mins
Main ingredients: apples, almonds, dates
difficulty level: easy
serves: 3-6
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, paleo, and delicious "even so"

Why have i never thought of making roast apples before? This is such a Christmas classic, i can't believe i've been missing out on it. Anyway, we made some last week, so i'll share our recipe :)

You could probably omit the vanilla custard (and maybe substitute with vanilla soy yoghurt or raw vegan vanilla bean cream), and even omit the marzipan, but this time we went for the more traditional ingredients.

It's not super duper healthy, but if you skip the custard and the marzipan, this is the perfect sugar-free but sweet and satisfying snack!

Happy Sunday and third Advent everybody!

Good morning, beautiful!

Today i'd like to share one of my absolute favourite breakfast creations with you - that i came up with spontaneously a while ago! This is extremely delicious and satisfying, perfect to fuel you for doing homework or working out afterwards!

Oh, and i snuck in a bag of green tea (that i just ripped open) for antioxidants. You wouldn't even have guessed there's something green in there, would you? :)

December Essentials /14

reading time: ca. 1 min

Maybe you remember me saying in my November Essentials that October/November was quite a tough, confusing time for me. Well, turns out November/December isn't any better. Actually it has been even more confusing, if that's even possible. Things just happen sometimes, i guess. But then again, i really need to get my shit together and take responsibility. So here's what's been going on over the past weeks: I have been partying too much, drinking too much, sleeping way too little, eating crap, and basically treating myself like shit. Sorry, but it's true. I was kind of a mess, a mixed signal, and i did some things i wouldn't usually have done under normal circumstances. I don't regret anything though because i feel like all of these things were necessary at the time. Anyway, i am sorting things out now. I want to do more Yoga again, sleep more (!!), eat healthier again, stop wasting money, stop wasting myself.

Alright. Diary emotion rant over.

Now onto Christmas jumpers. And Smoothie bowls!

Warming Winter Chocolate Smoothie Bowl (vegan)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Preparation time: 5 mins
Main ingredients: bananas, chocolate, orange, oats
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1-2
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, raw food, and delicious "even so"

For me, this is the perfect breakfast option for winter because it is not only warming and filling due to the bananas and oats, but also contains a lot of vitamins thanks to the orange juice as well as the Romaine lettuce and the green tea i snuck into the smoothie!

And the best thing is: you can't even tell by the taste that there's lots of green healthy stuff in this baby! :)

Following my recipe on Raw + cooked Sushi with raw-vegan Carrot Hummus from last year and my recent Yellow Sushi recipe with turmeric rice, me and my flatmates made a huge amount of vegan and non-vegan Sushi last weekend in celebration of 1st Advent, so i needed to share this.

Our Sunday Sushi Making included an inside-out roll and a batch of yummy vegan Hummus!

Maisy ❤ November 2014

reading time: ca. 2 min

This time we're gonna change things up a bit because due to all my university homework i have not had any time to read any novels. The only thing i read was lots and lots and lots of subject literature on transnationality, intertextuality, hybridity, subalternity, clash of civilizations... stuff like that ;) So instead of a book and a movie, i will talk about two movies that i went to see this month! I'm sure you have heard of them because there might have been a slight hype about them in the media. Let's see if they're really that good!

Watched: Interstellar (2014)

source: imdb

The Plot:
In the near future, Earth has been devastated by drought and famine, causing a scarcity in food (the soil is no longer able to sustain crops other than corn) and extreme changes in climate (mostly sandstorms). Humanity is facing extinction, when a wormhole in the space-time continuum is discovered that might provide the last change for mankind to survive. By leaving Earth. A group of explorers must travel beyond our solar system in search of a planet that can sustain life. The ex-NASA test pilot and now pilot of the "Endurance", Coop, must leave his family behind and join the crew to embark on an interstellar voyage into the unknown. In search for no less than the future of the human race.

The Acting:
First off, I am so glad that Matthew McConaughey played the main character of Cooper, instead of the typical shiny heroes like Brad Pitt or - God forbid - Tom Cruise. Also, I am not a fan of Anne Hathaway (sorry Anne), but she actually didn't bother me for once. Except for one or two tiny scenes where she was a little too dramatic and emotional for my taste, but I'm being a little nitpicky here, i suppose. The performance of Jessica Chastain and Mackenzie Foy as Coop's daughter Murphy (named after Murphy's Law) was on point. I have to say, even Matt Damon's little role left a great impression on me - not only because i wasn't aware of the fact that Damon was part of this epic movie, but mostly because of the depth of human psyche are displayed in his relationship to the main character Cooper. The key scene between those two is one of my favourite scenes throughout the entire movie. You'll know which one, if you've seen it.
