25 Ways to Wear a Bun

reading time: ca. 1 min

Hey honey buns (bad joke, i know),
please excuse the amount of "external" posts at the moment, but i have been on vacation last week and frankly didn't want to spend hours preparing a more sophisticated blog entry -.-
So for today's post i put together a small (cough) collage* of different types of hair buns, covering everything from the neat and tidy chignon to messy bun to donut bun and even Leia's double buns. Did i miss anything?

(1) Tousled Bun

(2) Ballerina Bun

Summer Reads for the beach

reading time: ca. 1 min

Best Books To Read In Summer, beach books, beach reads

Is there a better way to pass the time than reading when you are on the plane, on the train, in the car or simply at a nice peaceful forest lake? (Well, listening to music or drawing i suppose. But that's beside the point.) The point is: no, there isn't.

No-bake Red Velvet Shortcake & DIY "Happy Birdday" Card

reading time: ca. 3 min

It was my Mum's birthday last Monday, and since i was still working on my bachelor thesis at that point, i drove up to my parents' house over the weekend for a belated birthday get-together with my little family. And even though my Dad had made her a dairy-free strawberry cake on her actual birthday, according to our most recent family tradition we can't have a feast without a Maisy-made raw vegan cake.

So i whipped up my very first layered red velvet cake! Let's pop some champagne - hooray!

...And my Ice Cream Galore [summer special] ist hereby over! I can't believe how fast i posted these 20 raw vegan ice creams. So now i'ts back to "New Posts on Wednesdays & Sundays". But first i gotta throw some glitter for the grand gelato finale and present to you the coolest raw ice cream ever (#gettit? cool.) Anyway - i saved the best until last...

STRACCIATELLA!

Inspired by Harriet's stracciatella gelato over here (using coconut milk), i decided to make a raw vegan, fat-free and of course dairy-free version, using only bananas and cacao. Sound crazy? Well it's crazy good.

Tiny Tales of Love (Pt. 1)

The trees were shadows in the dark silence. Next to each other they walked, silently. She didn't know what to say. This oppressive silence. She was glad when he started talking, although afterwards she could remember his words only vaguely, as they walked together under the cover of the trees along the parkway.
»What were you up to today?« He kept his voice in a calm tone, but she could see how tense he was.
»Went to the cinema with a bunch of friends.«
»Was it any good? The movie, I mean.«
She stopped and looked at him. »What did you want to talk about?«
He cleared his throat. She watched him rub his hands against his sweater. »Well, yeah. So...« He looked down. »We've known each other for awhile now...«
Two weeks, she thought. Fourteen damn days. She felt her heart flutter faintly. Felt his words even before he voiced them. There it was, the feeling, sitting heavily in her stomach like a spiky creature that coiled and twisted deep down inside. She knew what was coming.
»... and I realized...« He took a breath. »That I'm in love with you. I think I... love you.«
Silence. How loudly the blood was pulsing through her head, she thought. And she knew she had to say something, but what.
»I... suppose I knew you'd say that«, she said. On his face - it was so open, so vulnerable, she couldn't look at him any longer - there the pain was as if she had slapped him in the face. She wanted to slap herself, but
It took him a few moments to take in her words. Slowly he went on. She followed him. »I don't know what to...« She broke off. »I'm not good at this.«
»You are the first one I've told something like this.« He looked up and gave a shaky smile. She didn't smile back.
He nodded slowly. »I want to know what you think about this. How you feel.«
She felt sick. The darkness came creeping towards her from all sides. She looked down so she wouldn't have to see his face. Grovel crunched under their steps. How she felt about it? What a stupid question. His words swirled around in her head. Why now? Why did he have to right now -
»I knew you were going to ask me something like this.« She spoke slowly. Numbly. Damn it, what was she gonna say? »Look, I... I know it's not fair towards you. But I'm not sure what to think of all that. I need time. Time to think, and to... I don't know. I just don't know.«
He nodded. He tried to hide it from her, but she could see how miserable he was. She felt disgusting. But it was the truth: she did not know how she felt. She did not know what she wanted. Knew nothing at all. That was the truth, was it not?
»Yeah. Sure«, he said. His voice strangely hoarse. »Take your time.« Perhaps this was the worst, his understanding words.
Silently they walked side by side, from time to time brushing each others arms. Silently they listened to the whispering voices of the night, gradually filtering down to them. Silently they walked along the gravel path. And silently, silently they stood still among the shades of the trees by their bikes.
With his thin face he turned to her. »Well.«
»Well...« She didn't know what to say. It was nice, see you tomorrow, bye. She wanted to reach out her hand, touch him, but there was something between them, the spoken words and the unspoken, separating them.
For a few heartbeats they stood in the dark silence, then she couldn't bear it anymore. She said: »I am sorry. I am.« Words without meaning.
He shrugged. »Don't be.« But she saw it in his eyes. She was a dodger, and he was a liar.

Sie gingen nebeneinander her, schweigend.
Also…« Er blickte zu Boden. »Wir kennen uns jetzt schon seit einiger Zeit...«
Zwei Wochen, dachte sie. Vierzehn verdammte Tage. Sie wusste, was jetzt kam.
»… und ich habe gemerkt…« Er holte Luft. »… dass ich mich in dich verliebt habe. Ich glaube, ich… liebe dich.«
Schweigen.
Warum jetzt?
Verflucht, was sollte sie sagen?
Langsam gingen sie nebeneinander her.
Wusste gar nichts. Das war die Wahrheit, oder nicht?
»Ja.
»Tja.«

Raspberry Swirl Ice Cream (raw, vegan)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Quick 2-ingredient ice cream without ice cream maker

Preparation time: 5 mins + 3 hours freezing time
Main ingredients: banana, raspberry
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

Picking fresh raspberries in the morning is one of my favorite things to do. Conveniently my parents have two raspberry bushes in their garden (both red and golden cultivars! i love the golden ones, they're so sweet and they fruit twice a year, once in early summer and once in fall!).

I like to pick them early in the morning when no one is up yet and it is quiet outside, a little chilly, the raspberries glistening with morning dew... It's a great way to start the day.

Chocolate Ice Cream (raw, vegan)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Quick 2-ingredient ice cream without ice cream maker

Preparation time: 5 mins + 3 hours freezing time
Main ingredients: banana, cocoa
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

Chocolate for breakfast? Uh yeah. This is my jam. Vegan lifestyle is boring? Hell no! Along with my Matcha ice cream and Peppermint ice cream, this is my all-time favourite "nice cream".

Who needs chocolate candy if you can make your own 100% plant-based healthy chocolate ice cream?! i mean, seriously.

Raspberry Sherbet (raw, vegan)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Quick 2-ingredient ice cream without ice cream maker

Preparation time: 5 mins + 3 hours freezing time
Main ingredients: raspberry, almond milk
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

Don't worry, all banana haters, this one is FREE FROM BANANAS!

Even though my other "nice creams" don't really taste like banana either because of their overpowering flavouring such as chocolate, mint, chai, mango, coffee etc. - but i know if you can't stand a particular taste, you will sense it even at the smallest dose. So here's a very easy and delicious Raspberry ice cream for those of you who don't like bananas :)

The great thing about sherbets is: they have the fruity lightness of a sorbet and the creaminess of milk.

"Pina Colada" Pineapple Ice Cream (raw, vegan)

reading time: ca. 2 min

Quick 3-ingredient ice cream without ice cream maker

Preparation time: 5 mins + 3 hours freezing time
Main ingredients: pineapple, coconut, banana
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

Piña Colada in ice cream form? - Yes please!

Instead of rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice we got pineapple cubes, shredded coconut, and of course the obligatory banana to make it creamier. You could also add in some coconut milk though.

Honestly, i prefer this lush tropical "nice cream" a dozen times over the actual cocktail - it doesn't give you a hangover, it will make you feel energized instead of drowsy, and it's just much more fun to sit at the pool and spoon up a big heap of Piña Colada Ice Cream - especially when it's served in a pineapple bowl :)

F for Fiber

reading time: ca. 3 min

We all know our bodies need calcium for bones, vitamin C to fend off colds, and chocolate to save relationships. But there is another component to our health and happiness that gets easily overlooked because it is "empty" and "bulking" and seemingly useless. This little puzzle piece is dietary fiber.

This is part of a little trivia series on the ABC of raw food lifestyle essentials where i share my knowledge of food and nutrition*. click here for the previous episode.

Main ingredients: banana, mint
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

How 'bout a bowl of cool mint ice cream on a hot summer's day?

Uh yeah, you've come to the right place my dear.

This is one of my favourite nice creams - okay, all of them are kind of my favourite because i could eat them all day long, but this is really one of the best, along with my Matcha ice cream and plain Chocolate ice cream!

Lemon Sherbet Ice Cream (raw, vegan)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Quick 2-ingredient ice cream without ice cream maker

Preparation time: 5 mins + 3 hours freezing time
Main ingredients: banana, lemon
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

To me, this is the perfect summer ice cream!

It's light, fresh and sort of cooling - and since we are using real lemons for this, it does not taste artificial at all. It has a wonderful tart flavor from the lemon juice and just enough sweetness to not overpower it.

My mum tasted this ice cream, and she says it's her favourite so far! (she used to love dairy-based lemon yogurt ice cream and lemon sherbet!)

*BTW: am i the only one who thinks of Harry Potter when someone mentions "sherbet"?

- easy peasy lemon squeezy! -

Creamy Peach Ice Cream (raw, vegan)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Quick 2-ingredient ice cream without ice cream maker

Preparation time: 5 mins + 3 hours freezing time
Main ingredients: banana, peach
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

I don't know about you, but ever since last summer i am in love with sweet juicy peaches, especially saturn peaches (they're also called paraguayo peaches or donut/doughnut peaches because of their flat, donut-like shape).

So i figured, why not make an ice cream with these! Right? This recipe would work just as well with nectarines though!

Basil Lime Sorbet (raw, vegan)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Quick 3-ingredient ice cream without ice cream maker

Preparation time: 5 mins + 3 hours freezing time
Main ingredients: banana, lime, basil
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

Even though the picture makes it look like a melted mess, this  sorbet was super yummy and cooling, making it the perfect refresher on a hot summer's day! If you were to prepare this like my Lemon Ice Cream (recipe: coming on Tuesday!), you should end up with a proper creamy ice cream, but since this looks very... runny, i will call a sorbet.  I should've added another frozen banana to this. Anyway - This recipe would also be perfect for popsicles!

Ingredients

3 large ripe bananas, frozen - i used 2 but recommend 3!
juice of 1/2 lime
3-5 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped - depending on your liking, i'm using 3 + 2 to garnish
1 tsp agave syrup or preferred sweetener (optional) - i'm not using any!

also:
- a high-speed blender or food processor (NO NEED FOR AN ICE CREAM MAKER!)

Instructions

Okay, you know the drill: Place frozen banana pieces in your blending machine (high-speed blender, food processor or juicer), blend for a few seconds, add lime juice and basil, then keep blending until creamy smooth. You could also use the juice of 1/2 lemon instead of lime, but... well, it wouldn't be a Basil Lime Sorbet any more then, would it.

Don't dawdle about or it will melt! :)

Note: This is part of my raw vegan Ice Cream Galore!

Green Jungle Smoothie

reading time: ca. 1 min

Happy July 4 to those of you living in the USA!
As you can see, it's not a red-white-blue but a green day for me :)

Preparation time: 5 mins
Main ingredients: banana, spinach
difficulty level: easy
makes: ~ 1000ml
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

It's no secret that i am a fan of green smoothies (it's seriously the best way to get a whole lot of amazing nutrients in your body before the day has even really begun), and since i recently read Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book i thought it would be perfect to make a Jungle-themed smoothie.

Chai Spice Ice Cream (raw, vegan)

reading time: ca. 1 min

Preparation time: 5 mins + 3 hours freezing time
Main ingredients: banana, cinnamon
difficulty level: easy
serves: 1
suitable for: vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, paleo, raw food, and delicious "even so"

Chai Tea is one of my favourite beverages of all time (i even made a recipe for Masala Chai!), and personally i have never seen Chai ice cream anywhere, so i thought i would come up with a recipe that is even dairy-free, raw and vegan! YAY!

*Note: if you don't have a Chai spice mix at hand, you can either make it yourself (see below) or cut open a teabag of Chai tea, and use the leaves and spices from that!
